Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide (gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine) and the body's most abundant intracellular antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage and supporting detoxification pathways. It is a genuine tripeptide (unlike some other compounds marketed alongside it), sold both as an approved injectable in some countries for specific medical uses and, more commonly in wellness/aesthetic markets, as an unapproved 'skin-brightening' or general antioxidant IV/injectable.


Glutathione (GSH) is synthesized from three amino acids -- glutamate, cysteine, and glycine -- with the reactive thiol (-SH) group on cysteine giving it its central redox function: it directly scavenges reactive oxygen species and serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes that neutralize peroxides and conjugate xenobiotics for excretion. Endogenous synthesis and recycling (between reduced GSH and oxidized GSSG) is tightly regulated, and depleted glutathione status is associated with oxidative stress in numerous disease states. Injectable/IV glutathione has legitimate, though narrow, clinical uses in some countries (for example as adjunctive therapy in certain respiratory and hepatic contexts), and it is a documented use in HIV-related care. It is separately, and far more visibly, marketed off-label in aesthetic medicine as a 'whitening injection' for skin-lightening, and in wellness IV clinics for general antioxidant/detox support -- uses that are not FDA-approved and for which large randomized efficacy trials are limited, despite glutathione's antioxidant role in basic biology being well established.


Mechanism of Action

Directly scavenges reactive oxygen and nitrogen species via its reactive cysteine thiol group. Serves as an essential cofactor for glutathione peroxidase (neutralizing hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides) and glutathione S-transferase (conjugating and detoxifying electrophilic xenobiotics for excretion). Maintains protein sulfhydryl groups in a reduced state and participates in amino acid transport (gamma-glutamyl cycle). The skin-lightening effect claimed in aesthetic use is proposed to work by shifting melanin synthesis from darker eumelanin toward lighter pheomelanin and inhibiting tyrosinase, though this mechanism is better characterized in vitro than confirmed as a robust clinical effect.
